Held orders: hold, reopen, drop

Rush hour: the customer at the counter is still reading the menu while the next one is holding out cash. Don’t make the next one wait.

Hold an order to serve the next customer

Press "Hold order" at the top of the cart. Type a quick label such as "Table 3" or "Takeaway", or leave it empty and the device names it "Held order 1", "Held order 2"… Press "Hold order" again and it is put aside; a new cart opens right away.

The cart has a "Dine in / Takeaway" switch, set to Dine in by default. Hold an order with the "Takeaway" label and it switches to Takeaway by itself.

A held order is not paid yet. Close the app and open it again – the held orders are still there.

Reopening a held order

On iPad, held orders sit in a strip on the sell screen; each chip shows the label, number of items and total. On a phone the "Held (N)" button opens the list. Tap an order to open it.

The order is always by when each was first held: the one you open stays in its place and says "Open now". Open another while you are mid-order and the current cart goes back to its own place in the strip, with nothing lost. If a price changed since an order was held, it keeps the old price and the device says so.

The held-orders strip on iPad. The open "Takeaway" order stays in its place.

No gaps in receipt numbers

Receipt numbers (like Q1-0042) are only given out when the order is paid. Holding an order and dropping it leaves no gap in the numbers, so the end-of-day check still runs straight.

Dropping a held order

If the customer doesn’t want it any more, press the × on the chip; pressed by mistake? "Undo". When a held order is older than 12 hours, or there are held orders at closing time, the device asks "Drop the held orders?" and you choose to drop them or "Keep" (kept ones move to the next shift). They were never paid, so dropping them doesn’t affect sales.
